What Steve Jobs has done Right…

A Rigid Format.

It’s hard to argue that such a defined format across four hardware devices isn’t smart. It’s close to genius - close to maniacal.

In a tech world run amok with ideas of non propriety, open source, open formats, Apple is locked down. Locked down hard.

From a developers/designers stand point, there aren’t a multitude of screens/UI/Hardware/OS variants to test against. This is bank for Apple/iTunes and I would bet that many of iPhone/iPod developers are anti rigidity at heart, but wholly embrace Steve’s absolute structure.

Google - Courting anyone and everyone with the Droid OS without a strict hardware standard looks good on paper but in practice is so PC. As time goes forward support gets convoluted.

Having different Droid phones running with different Droid OS’s isn’t future proofing anything. Steve Jobs scores

Stare Down a Huge Web Format.

Adobe is the king of media development in content creation for Web delivery (for the PC). Flash technology is huge part Adobes success and Steve Jobs negative stand on such a widespread standard is ballsy. Job’s influence outside fanbois rave is palpable and no corporation wants to be seen as broken or out of touch against Apples mind share.

The winner is HTML5. It is not a revolution by any means, but Steve’s rallying for it can only focus attention of Web Browsers to actually stick to HTML5 rules (for once).
